DIY Soy Candles [RECIPE]
I’m a candle fanatic and have been for years. I love using them to help set the ambiance and pretty up the air with natural scents. Not sure if you already know this, but soy wax candles burn more cleanly and efficiently than their paraffin counterparts, making them an eco-friendlier and more budget-conscious alternative. I wanted to share my favorite soy candle recipe that became my go-to, especially during these crafty covid times.
DIY Soy Candles
What you’ll need:
- soy wax flakes
- essential oils
- natural candle wicks
- saucepan
- pencils
- jars, candle tins, or cute lil’ vintage teacups
- glitter, shells, gemstones, dried flower petals for decoration (optional)
Estimate how much wax you’ll need. Keep in mind soy wax flakes melt to roughly half their volume, so take your jar and fill it with soy wax flakes twice.
Melt soy wax in a double boiler (a tool for applying gentle heat when melting) over medium heat, stirring frequently.
Tip: You can DIY a double boiler by stacking a metal or glass bowl on top of a saucepan, making sure the bowl fits snugly. You can also melt the wax in a microwave-safe container and on high for about 90 seconds.
When the wax is fully melted, let it cool just a bit before adding in your essential oil(s) – 2 teaspoons oil for every 4-ounces melted wax.
Attach your wick to your container by dipping the wick in the melting wax then sticking it to the bottom. Allow it to cool and harden. Pour the wax into your containers, leaving about 1 inch of space at the top. Twist the wick around a pencil and set it on top of the container so the wick stays centered. When the wax is starting to firm, place any decorative bits on top. Trim the wick so about 1 inch of wick remains, and you’re all set!
